micro SD Cards, NOT BLANK

by plc_gremlin on Thu Nov 23, 2017 1:31 am

Dear Adafruit,

I have a project where I am starting to use the "Blank" 4GB micro SD card's you sell.
I use them with Teensy 3.5 and will likely be using ALOT of them.

They are unfortunately not Blank..
You guys are using a MAC(I assume) when you format them and it is leaving little MAC droppings all over the place.
About 93 hidden Files and Folders.
It would be awesome if you could figure out a way to send them out completely Blank so we don't have to reload them onto a Windows box and remove all the files before we can use with T3.5's. I don;t think that the Teensy 3.5 can remove the files itslef because it only reports 8.3 filenames and you need the filename to be able to do a SD.remove("filename");..
Thanks, you guys(and gals) are great!

Here is a Serial.print listing from the Arduino Example SD Card program ListFiles.
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
Initializing SD card...initialization done.

I'll check with the folks who handle the cards for sale. Thanks for letting us know!

I'm also seeing this... it seems Mac is dropping all of these little garbage files on the card immediately after doing a full Overwrite Format with the official SD Card Formatter app... annoying!

You can prevent Spotlight from adding those files in

System Prefs → Spotlight → Privacy

But if they are already on there you have to remove them via Terminal. In my case:

rm -rf .Spotlight-V100/
rm -rf .fseventsd/

No, I don't own a Mac.
I opened the package, plugged it into a Teensy 3.5 and noticed all the files.
Then plugged into Windows machine to see what they were. Googled some of the files and found info that andrhamm suggested. They are being added by spotlight on a Mac,

Ok. To answer your first question. I just checked.
2 out of the 10 that I bought did not have the files... this is really strange as I expected they would all be the same. I'm 99.26% confident that I didn't plug a couple in a delete files back when I first noticed this. but... I've been going 99mph on projects so.. maybe???
They have to be being plugged into a Mac somewhere along the line before they arrived at my door.

Have you guys grabbed some out of your stock to see if they have the files? check them on a Windows PC of course.

this is not an earth shattering issue, just one less thing I have to worry about if they arrived blank. Will probably be ordering more soon.
Thanks!

ok thanks - we checked this out, and found that a few weeks ago we had a QA check on these cards (some we had gotten were corrupted) and we had unwittingly used a Mac to just check that the card comes up as a drive. The good news - if it has those files, we know it's a good card! :) Going forward we will no longer use a Mac. thanks for alerting us!
