PowerBoost 1000 Overheating

by thedroidness on Thu Dec 14, 2017 2:44 pm

Hello,

I am having the same problem with Powerboost 1000 Basic - 5V USB Boost @ 1000mA from 1.8V+ I received. It has been overheating every time its plugged in. I am also using a Lithium Ion Cylindrical Battery - 3.7V 2200mAh and USB/DC/Solar Lithium Ion/Polymer charger with it.

I checked the polarity on the battery and it was good. I tried plugging a USB cable in to see if the energy will flow through, but it doesn't. I have also tried putting a 2.2k ohm resistor on the polymer charger, in hopes that it may have done something, but the powerboost continues to overheat. I think it has got too hot that the wires fell off, but the solder is still kept on. I have also tried wiring a push button to it, in hopes for something, but still overheating.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can try.
Thanks!

With everything disconnected from the PowerBoost, what resistance do you see between the BAT and GND pins?

Hello Mike,

Thanks for reaching out. There is about 1K resistance between BAT and GND.

What should I do next?

That suggests a blown switch in the boost converter.

Just to check, when did you get the PowerBoost?

I ordered the powerboost on Friday 24 November, but didn't receive it until Saturday 2 December.

That's still well within our return/replace period, thank you.

Send a note containing a link to this thread and your order number to support@adafruit.com. The folks there will get you another PowerBoost 1000 Basic.
