Heat Shrink Question for High Temp Waterproof DS18B20

by njc_rit on Sat Mar 03, 2018 12:29 pm

I have seen on these forums that the black heat shrink that comes with the sensor (white, high temperature version) is not food grade. I also understand that you sell a food safe heat shrink that you recommend putting over the existing heat shrink, but that is not feasible for my application. I have a few related questions:

1. What is underneath the heat shrink that seals the cable/IC in the stainless steel jacket?
2. Would the cable fixture still be waterproof if the heat shrink were removed? I understand that this will likely make it more fragile.
3. Do you have any additional information on the actual material of the heat shrink?
4. In a prior post you mentioned "We have added a note - 'Not for use in salt water or other corrosive environments.' ". Is this true? This note is not present on the product page.
5. As per the forum post related to question #1, what is the potting material underneath the heat shrink?

Thanks for the help! Great products!

PS: Please consider replacing the black heat shrink with a food grade version. Putting the black heat shrink on a PTFE and stainless sensor defeats the purpose for many different use cases.

1. We don't manufacture these so we don't know.
2. We have not taken one apart to see.
3. No.
4. That is in the description of the regular version. I will let the team know to add it to this one too.
5. See #1

You can get an FDA compliant ( not approved, but compliant ) Heat Shrink PTFE Tubing in either White or Black. Fluoropolymer Resins are designed from FDA and USP Class VI approved resins.

Now if you need the high Temperature and still wanted to stay water tight you could try a Dual Wall PTFE / FEP

And if you stayed with PTFE you would definitely not have to worry about - "Not for use in salt water or other corrosive environments."
