SPH0645 reads only 0's after battery charge

SPH0645 reads only 0's after battery charge
I have an M0 adalogger featherwing with an i2s mems microphone sph0645lm4h running from a 500mAh battery. It all worked fine for a while. After the 5th or 6th charge of the battery I think there was a voltage spike and then blew out the microphone so it only reads 0 values now. I thought I did something so I got another microphone. Again, after a while of use when plugging in my m0 while the battery switch (I thought was off but maybe it was on) when plugging in to charge the battery it happened again. Do I need to control the power to the mic with a zener diode / resister / capacitor? or the tx / rx with resisters to prevent this in the future?
