Overheating Powerboost 1000

Hi there, I just purchased a powerboost 1000 and it seems to be overheating. The IC on the board becomes very hot, as well as the board itself. When I plug a lithium ion battery into the powerboost, it immediately begins overheating, and the low battery LED comes on. However, the battery is fully charged and I measured the voltage of the battery to be 4.2V. When I plug a USB cable into the board (connected to a power source, like a laptop at the other end), with no battery connected, the powerboost also overheats and the charging battery LED comes on (even though no battery is actually connected).
