MAX9744 Amplifier not working

Post by ThaHarvesta »

I bought a MAX9744 class D amplifier along with the 2 recommended speakers. I have assembled everything correctly, plugged in a 12V DC power supply into the + and - power terminal. I have tried analogue mode with the 1k potentiometer provided. I have also wired up the capacitor to the board as well. My connections to the speakers are fine and the soldered joints are conductive. No sound or gain is coming through the speakers at all.

It sounds like you are trying the basic test?
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-20w ... basic-test
What is your audio source?

Or have you soldered the analog mode jumpers also?

I tried the basic test and it did not work, I then tried an analog test by soldering the 3 jumpers on the board. I am using a 3.5mm jack running from my phone to the board.

Seems all in order, and then you should be able to slowly turn up the pot to increase the volume. Let's check the hardware. Can you post a photo of both sides of the MAX9744 board.

I have tried using the potentiometer, is it around the correct orientation as in the instructions, I will post images of the board when I can get a chance to.

Yep, post some images when you get a chance. That'll help. Please post photos showing both sides of the board. Thanks.

Here are the pictures of my board with the wiring. Sorry for the delay and poor image quality, hopefully it can be fixed.

Thanks. It's a little hard to tell for sure in those photos if the soldering is good. Can't quite make out the one jumper here:

and the speaker outputs look like they may be a little thin:

Can you post photos with more detail on those areas.

Also, do you know the current rating for the 12V power supply you are using.

The power supply I am using is a 2-12V adjustable power supply, I was running the board on 10-12V when I was testing, with a total load of 15amp max, it is an L.V power supply. I have some much higher quality pictures now, but they are too high quality and are over the 1mb limit. Is there an email address I can send these too?

Sorry about the file size limit road block. Can you try using this online converter to reduce the image file size down:

Do you mean the current limit on the power supply was set to 15amp?

The power supply had a maximum output of 15A, I am not sure if this means it was constantly running at 15A or it was adapting to the power the board needed.

Thanks. Those photos are much better. I'd say the soldering seems fine at this point.

Let's check the power setup. It'd be easiest to just post another photo of the power supply so we can see what you are using. Since it's "adjustable", maybe it has its current limit set all the way down?

Here is the power supply I am using, I also tried using a 1A 12V DC power supply plugged in from a wall socket, that did not work either, but the + and - power terminals were outputting 12V when the DC was plugged in at 12V.

OK, I'd think one of those should at least give some signs of life, esp. the 12V/1A wall power supply. That bench one looks a little more suspect.

So let's look at your audio source some more.

This is just a standard TRS (3 conductors) male-to-male cable? Have you plugged in some headphones to make sure audio is coming out of the phone?

Yes I am using an ordinary 3.5mm male to male audio jack, and yes sound does play from my phone without headphones and with headphones. Would you recommend I use the 1A DC wall power supply instead of the one in the photo above?
