No tear strip on mini thermal printer?

by dlareau on Wed Sep 11, 2019 6:44 pm

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, so if it is the wrong place, just let me know.

Is there supposed to be a paper tear strip (some metal or plastic serrated edge) to help tear the receipt paper on the *mini* thermal printer?

I can clearly see the tear strips on the product images of the Tiny and Nano versions, and when purchasing, I assumed the mini was just hidden by some guard because they had the available space. Now that I have the printer in hand though (working fine) I can't seem to easily tear the paper, instead usually just pulling more paper out and jamming the machine next time it wants to print. After giving it a pretty good inspection, I can see nothing that would be supposed to cut the paper. Surely if the mini lacked this crucial feature that both the tiny and nano have, Adafruit would mention it somewhere on the product page right?

So whats the deal? Do I have a defect printer, or is Adafruit selling printers with no way to tear the paper off?

This printer does not have a cutter and requires manual tearing.

This topic has come up before and the customer used a third party guillotine cutter.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I saw that post, that post is concerned about an automatic cutter. I am talking about the non-moving serrated edge on the bottom of most thermal printers, like the edge clearly visible in this photo of the tiny printer: https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/1200x900/2751-03.jpg

If the mini printer does not have an edge like this, I think that detail should be added into the product listing. You say the paper "requires manual tearing" but without this edge it is more like manual cutting with a sharp object as pulling upwards on the printed paper just pulls out more paper and pulling downwards sometimes tears the paper, but the rough newly torn edge jams the print over half the time, something that likely wouldn't happen with a clean serrated edge.

Would you mind sending over a photo of the top of your printer. I can pass this along and if there is no tear strip we should get that into the description for clarity.

Attached are a few angles.

The product photo for the printer is honestly pretty accurate: https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/1200x900/597-04.jpg

I just figured that because this was such a standard feature that the tear strip was hiding under the lip or something. (as my internal photos show, no such luck)

There is that weird indented area on the main body of the printer just below the door, that almost looks like that is where a cerated strip was supposed to go. I think I'll likely just end up gluing one in place there. (I'll probably steal a section of serrated edge from a box of tin foil or something).

Thank you for the detailed photos I will pass this along.

The tin foil cut off was the hacky solution that came to mind for me too.

I'm having the same problem with my mini thermal printer. I watched this video before buying it, but I cannot recreate the "tears really easily": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6KvQShmRJg&feature=youtu.be&t=1746 I plan on having many people tear out prints, so I need it to be easy.

Had I realized that the mini printer was missing a tear strip, I would have bought the Tiny model instead. I guess I'll look for a tin foil box and try to glue on its tear strip. dlareau, did that method work for you?
