FTDI problem

by rhbiz on Sat May 15, 2010 11:21 am

I recently purchased two sim card reader kits from you.
One I assembled and am using with a usb-serial converter
and a nine-volt battery. It operates very well.

The other I intend to put in a smaller case and decided to
use an FTDI cable. I consequently did not install the nine
volt battery connector nor the serial connector. I also ordered
an FTDI TTL-232 5V cable from you.

I received the FTDI TTL-232 cable and attached it to the second
sim card reader. The led lights but it will not read the sim card.
After attaching the nine volt battery and using it with the FTDI
cable, it works. The Vista computer I have it attached to sees
the FTDI cable as a 3 volt cable. This leads me to believe that
I have a 3 volt cable rather than a 5 volt cable.

What solution can you suggest?

the 'voltage' of the cable isnt the the power output, its always 5v, the 3v is the logic levels. check your soldering and/or just use a 9V

Sorry, I misread that. I do have 5volts on pin 3 and
have resoldered all connections and checked for solder
bridges. No joy.

As I mentioned I have built another sim reader which I use with
a usb-serial adapter and a 9-volt battery. It works fine. However,
if I try to use the FTDI cable and no battery with it, it doesn't work.
Add the battery and it works. Two units, one cable with 5 volts,
LEDs light with just the FTDI cable. There is some other problem
here.

Any other ideas?

what 'doesnt work'? the cable isnt found or is the software not reading the card?

The exact same thing happened to me, same error on 64-bit Windows 7with the FTDI cable. I soldered on the 9-pin connector and powered from a battery and it worked.

The only thing I'm getting is from SIM->SIM Information, this error :
