SIM Reader USB/Serial Converter Drivers Windows 7 64-bit?

by dox on Fri May 28, 2010 7:52 pm

As a software programmer for many years I began experiencing this nagging pull toward wanting to know more about the little bits that ultimately powered what I was building. After poking about here and there and not getting anywhere I eventually wandered in to this domain.. after a few days of waffling I decided to place an order and get some hands-on experience researching every piece as I burned it in -- oh my how I have enjoyed this!! Nary a week goes by without putting aside a few hours to dig deeper and attempt to satiate my desire to learn -- I paid for what I got but I do believe I still owe a debt thanks to your site and your demonstrated ability and interest in facilitating this interesting environment; the kits, instructions, photos and forums have really provided me with a truly satisfying experience that's taking me even deeper down this path: thank-you!

Though I am aware that I run the risk of cheapening my above statement by following it with a simple request I assure you I've spent time searching and trying before reaching out for help. I've assembled the SIM Reader and am eager to try it out however it seems that the only thing stopping me is locating the appropriate drivers for the USB/Serial Converter that I ordered along with it. Could you be so kind as to point me in the right direction so as to get it to play nice with my Windows 7 64bit install? I tried what came on the disk, I've drilled down by various identifiers and Google'd my fingers out to no success..

Thanks tons in advance and keep up the outstanding work!

If the prolific windows 7 x64 drivers don't work, then you're not in good shape.

Thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate it!

I had previously come upon that driver and given it a try with no luck. On the link above it mentions For Prolific USB VID_067B&PID_2303 Only but when I plug in this device it is recognized as a "USB2.0-Serial" and and lists VID_1A86&PID_7523 under Hardware Ids. :?:

The VID/PID suggest that it has a Winchiphead CH341 chip.

Driver from mfg web site

There are many different chips used in the translucent blue adapters. You never know what you are going to get. The PL2303 (clone?) is the only one that really works well. Some don't have proper level shifters (max232) and some don't have any handshake lines.
I am the Possum, and I approve of this message. Sent from MacBook Wheel Sorry for my bad German.

I also purchased the USB to Serial device because I knew that pl2303 would work with my hardware from my Ubuntu systems. However, the chipset id results in the ch341 driver getting loaded which doesn't work for me.

dmesg output after plugging in the converter:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
[11799.921559] usb 2-7: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 5
[11800.146207] usb 2-7: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[11800.330008] USB Serial support registered for ch341-uart
[11800.330051] ch341 2-7:1.0: ch341-uart converter detected
[11800.365199] usb 2-7: ch341-uart converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[11800.365236] usbcore: registered new interface driver ch341

lsmod output after plugging in the converter:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
Module                  Size  Used by
ch341                   9988  0
usbserial              43248  1 ch341

@Adafruit: can I return the converter for store credit or a refund?

Thanks,

Eric.
