TXB0104 with Raspberry Pi

Help!

I connected the TX and RX of a Raspberry Pi (GPIO header pins #8 and #10) to RX3 and TX3 on a Arduino ATMega2560. I put a TXB0104 (http://www.adafruit.com/product/1875) between them for the level shifting. However, the two devices don't seem to want to talk. There is a blurb on the TXB104 page about it not playing well with SPI pins. Does the same issue apply to serial lines?

As near as I can tell, if I feed 3.3V from the A side to the B side, I get 5V out. Likewise if I put 5V into the B side, I get 3.3V out on the A side.
