USB Extension Cable with Data/Charge Sync Switch PRODUCT ID:

by csydorak on Wed Jun 16, 2021 11:46 am

I am interested in this cable, but I am not sure it would work for my use case after reading the description. From what I understand, when the switch is in the 'Data' position, it allows for both power and data, when it is in the 'Charge' position, it only allows for power.

For my purpose, I would like to only transfer data, but not power, is that possible with this or no?
Thanks for your time

That is not how it works, sorry. The data is switched but the power isn't. What is your project and what does it require? You might be able to modify a USB cable or the device itself to accomplish this.

No, the switch disconnects the data lines leaving 5v and ground in place.

You can make your own data-only cable (you'll need ground as well for it to work) using https://www.adafruit.com/product/1387 and either https://www.adafruit.com/product/1388 or a more specific end like https://www.adafruit.com/product/1390. Then connect ground, D-, and D+ leaving 5v unconnected.

Thank you both for the response, much appreciated and definitely helpful!

My purpose here is mainly out of a concern for slightly increased battery degradation when leaving the device plugged in and charging the lithium ion to 100% almost permanently. We do not need it to charge but do want to keep it connected for data. Ideally we could control this trough software and have it stop at 80%, but that isn't feasible for now.

I will most likely go the route of modifying a cable in that case, thank you kindly for the suggestions.
