Hello and good day from Germany,
I bought two Adafruit STEMMA Soil Sensor - I2C Capacitive Moisture sensors and I am very satisfied with them, both sensors work very well in dry conditions. I would like to use the sensors in the garden area and in greenhouses in the future. My questions: How can I best protect the sensors?
1. Is it necessary to additionally protect the lower part of the circuit board that is inserted into the ground? Are the sides of the circuit board waterproof too?
2. How do I protect the upper electronic part? Protective varnish like Teslanol or shrink tubing?
What do you recommend?
Thank you in advance.

Re: Adafruit STEMMA Soil Sensor protect
The part that gets pushed into the soil is already protected. The upper part with the electronics could be encased in epoxy. It doesn't need to be overly tidy, just completely sealing the board to keep moisture out. That includes the connector and where the wires meet it. Using just shrink tubing will protect it to an extent but won't make it water-tight. A piece over the end result might make it look tidier, though.

Re: Adafruit STEMMA Soil Sensor protect
Thanks a lot, Dave.
I'll try epoxy, a competing product (V2.1) only survived 3 weeks despite the electronics being sealed, so I switched to Adafruit.
Let's see how long this sensor will last, but I'm quite hopeful.
Are there any studies on the durability of the sensor?
