So about a week ago I received my brand-spanking new 7" 800x480 HDMI Backpack [w/o Touch]. I was so excited I took it straight to our 3D printer guy to custom make a bezel for it.
Once he built it, I installed it and mounted the device in my desired location. Now for the moment of truth: time to plug it in. I hooked it to the 2A USB slot in my wall outlet and took the HDMI out of the TV I had been using and plugged it in to the display. Nuthin'. No image, nada.
So, I tried another computer. Still nothing. Another computer. Same result. I have concluded that this display just doesn't want to show me the money. Any thoughts?
Computers Used:
1st - HP EliteDesk 800 G5 [HDMI output confirmed]
2nd - Dell Latitude 7420 [HDMI output confirmed]
3rd - Apple M1 Macbook Air [HDMI output confirmed, uses Thunderbolt 3 4K dongle]
HDMI Cable - Belkin 1M [HDMI confirmed on multiple devices]

Interesting 3D print cover. What material / color is that you are using? It has a cool mirror like trim effect.
This could be a hardware issue with the display, but is more likely to be a software configuration issue.
Have you set the resolution to 800x480 on the devices you have been connecting?
We have clear instructions for connecting this display to a Raspberry Pi.

Re: 7" HDMI Backpack Doesn't Display Anything
The computer never recognizes the display so I am unable to change the output resolution.
Or...
Are you saying that I need to set the output resolution of the computer using another display [set the output to 800x480] then connect to this display??

Re: 7" HDMI Backpack Doesn't Display Anything
Ok... two additional bits of info
1. I'm not sure why you included the setup on RPi, when I clearly indicated in my original comments that I am not using a Pi. I don't see anything in those instructions that help me to figure out what's going on when I hook this to a PC or Mac.
2. I went back to the HP computer and set the screen resolution to 800x480 using a different display and then swapped in the backpack. Still nothing. The green led on the back lights up to indicate power, but the screen doesn't even backlight and there is no image.
I think I may have received a dud.

Re: 7" HDMI Backpack Doesn't Display Anything
This display is recommended for single board computers which is why I posted the Raspberry Pi config links which show the details of the resolution settings that your machine must provide.
Please contact [email protected] and provide them with a link to this forum thread and your invoice number to pursue a refund.
You are welcome to return this display for a refund, but I do not recommend a replacement as you will likely encounter the same issue with your OS interacting with this monitor. This driver is designed specifically as a small and easy to use display driver for our 40-pin TTL displays. In particular, we suggest it for use with single board computers (or desktop/laptops!) with DVI/HDMI output like the Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black.

Thanks for the refund information. I'll follow up on that.
That said, your reply makes no sense in light of this first line from the product description.

Its a mini panel-mountable HDMI monitor! So small and simple, you can use this display with any computer that has HDMI output, and the shape makes it easy to attach to a case or rail.

@mikeysklar
The green light powers on, but the screen does not illuminate or show any image. It is my assertion that the device is defective. Don't you agree?

I suspect the display is functional, but will be challenging to work with anything but a Raspberry Pi.

Then again I'll ask why the first line of the product description states something entirely different? Your response makes NO logical sense in light of the product advertisement.

Re: 7" HDMI Backpack Doesn't Display Anything
I believe the confusion is based on a minor change to the product.
The 5" and 7" HDMI backpacks originally shipped with a well known EDID (extended display identification data). Over time that EDID changed and several types video cards or rather their drivers had difficulty with the new EDID reducing compatibility. On the Pi side it is easy enough to override with a custom /boot/config.txt. Take a look at the end of this thread:
