Using two VL53L4CX's for triangulating: crosstalk?

Post by allan170 »

Hi,

I was wondering if there are any issues with using two VL53L4CX rangefinders simultaneously on the same object. Are the devices smart enough to sense only their own reflected light, or is there the possibility of crosstalk where one sensor might pick up the other sensor's light and give an erroneous time of flight?

I know the ultrasonic rangefinders can have problems with this type of crosstalk, and so (at least the Maxbotix ones) have a built-in method for making sure only one of them is operating at any given instant. Is this sort of thing necessary for the laser ones too?

Thanks for any info!

Crosstalk comes up a few times in the ST documentation fo the VL53L4CX and it looks promising.

Targets beyond 80 cm range are immune to crosstalk from cover glass, and smudge
Live crosstalk correction
Part-to-part or generic shape crosstalk calibration available

Thank you for the reply!

I searched the ST forums and it does indeed look promising:

The sensors do not appear to interfere with each other. Just prior to ranging each sensor samples the ambient light and takes a measurement. Each sensor considers the other sensors as ambient light. So go ahead and place them close. It works.
