motor driver for adafruit PWM driver?

by ruprecht on Mon Aug 27, 2012 11:42 pm

Hi, I'm working on a haptic feedback application that will be driven from a RasPi via the Adafruit PCA9685 PWM driver. It will drive a number of eccentric rotating mass brushed motors similar to this one: http://goo.gl/x5bqQ .

The motor vendor does have some application notes on driver ICs here http://goo.gl/NOhyZ but they are either too low voltage, or in non-hobbyist packages (SMT etc) or not available in any of my usual stores. Can anyone recommend a driver IC (or analogue circuit) that can sit between the PWM board and the motor and meets the following:

- hobbyist package (through-hole)
- 12V rated (not critical, I can probably step down to a lower voltage motor)
- provides PWM-driven motor speed (reverse not required)
- available from Adafruit/Element14/RS etc
- compatible with the Adafruit PWM board specs

Thanks

The N-channel MOSFET circuit shown in the vendor's application bulletin 001 should work well with the through-hole N-channel MOSFET we have in the store: https://www.adafruit.com/products/355

It's a bit of overkill, but robust and simple to use. These are designed for direct 5v logic operation. So you can omit the series resistor on the Gate and drive it directly from the PWM output pin.
