DS18B20 Temp Sensor

by SaltySteve on Thu Nov 22, 2012 3:06 am

I just ordered the waterproof version of the DS18B20 Temp. Sensor, and I am hoping that it will be fit for use in a salt water aquarium.

Is it?
Will it stand up over time being completely submerged in salt water?

Thanks

I know some customers have purchased them for that purpose, but I haven't heard any feedback. The tip sheath is stainless, but as you probably know - that alone is not a guarantee of survival in salt water. I'd consider passivating it before deploying in a marine aquarium:

I have had two "Waterproof DS18B20" temperature sensors fail in my saltwater aquarium. :-(

I would like to know if there is a temperature sensor that can be mounted onto the object.

What object do you want to mount it on?

I would like to mount it on electrical components like a processor, battery in a Vaccum environment. Also, the sensor should not be conductive.

The plastic bodied DS18B20 or TMP-36 could be glued to a surface with a thermal adhesive such as ArcticSilver.

There are insulated thermocouple probes designed for surface mounting, but they usually need to be bolted on.

Do you have insulated thermocouple probes?

Also, can the plastic temp sensor withstand like 70 C?

We do not stock insulated thermocouples. They are available from most industrial supply sources. Omega Engineering usually has the most extensive selection.

Both the DS18B20 and TMP36 in plastic packages are rated for up to 125C.
