Pigrrl Zero question

by mrbobokins on Thu Jun 02, 2016 9:02 pm

Hello, I bought the Pigrrl Zero project and have soldered most of the parts but am having trouble with the software. I am using the fedora-arm-installer program to write the zip folder to my Pi Zero. I have windows 10 and I can't seem to unzip the Pigrrl Zero img file from the zip file, I always get an error. My problem I that the pitft only displays a white screen after I insert the micro sd card, please help. thank you :)

You don't simply unzip the image to SD. You have to actually build the image on SD. See this instructions and a list of tools:

I'm also have an issue just extracting the PiGRRL_Zero software, I've tried downloading the zip on 2 different machines.

Is there another zip file for this project?

The file is compressed using 7zip. It's standard on Linux, but not on Windows or OS X.

There are free 7zip extractors for both OSes though.

AFAIK, the Raspbian images are still 4GB.

That's the OS image specifically for the PiGrrl Zero project, but the hardware pack for those should come with an 8GB SD card:

Which version did you order?

Send a note containing a link to this thread to support@adafruit.com. The folks there will get you an 8GB SD card.

Is there an updated link to the ready made image described earlier in this post? I have tried several archive programs including 7zip and they state the file is broken or corrupt. I have also searched through other posts with the same issue, but no resolution. Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue as Caboose_FBS. I tried the stock Windows 10 extractor, 7zip, redownloaded, and couldn't get it to work. I had to eventually boot up into Ubuntu and was able to download and unzip using the unzip command in a terminal window and then copied it back over to Windows to burn the image. I have no idea if the image actually works as I'm still finishing up assembly but I get the feeling there is something up with this image.

I figured out the issue that I was having. It's ultimately going to be a windows only issue and a limitation with the size of the img file. Windows installs of 7zip, WINRAR, etc are not able to decompress files larger than 4gb and this is the full 8gb img that was directly cloned from the 8gb sd card. I found that macOS and Linux can decompress the file with no issues. WINRAR may be able to extract to the file if you set it ignore errors, but i didn't try that.

Ideally, having the IMG file size being of a 2gb install to start would be best. Then let us repartition based on the size of the card installed. Maybe have a note that this won't unzip in windows or something. Ain't going to lie though, it did make it dead simple to burn the img and then pop it in with the supplied 8gb card with the kit.
