Writing | avrdude: error: usbtiny_

by montreuilg on Mon Oct 24, 2016 5:18 am

Hello,

I am trying to upload the Blink program to the USB Pro Trinket 3V.

The problem appears shortly after writing flash (see text at bottom of included picture):

At times I'll get this message:

Writing |
avrdude: error: usbtiny_send: Broken pipe (expected 128, got -32)
avrdude: 1 retries during SPI command

And other times, one like this:

Writing |
avrdude: error: usbtiny_send: Operation timed out (expected 128, got -60)
avrdude: 1 retries during SPI command

After that, the Arduino IDE repeats this line over and over
avrdude: x retries during SPI command

... until I unplug the USB cable. This is where the line
usbtiny_receive: Device not configured (expected 4, got -6)

appears with the rest of the log entries after that. I have tried 3 different cables connected directly to any of the 4 available USB ports at the back of the iMac with the same results.I am using the Arduino IDE 1.6.12 on OS X 10.12 (Sierra).

If you have any idea as to what might cause this behavior, I would like to know since I have all the hardware for Phillip Burgess' animated fire pendan' assembled right in front of me, and I can't see it glow :-(

Thanks in advance,

_
gabriel

Those errors are indicating retries. If you ignore them, does the upload eventually succeed?

Try connecting through a USB2.0 hub and see if the errors go away.

I'm having the same trouble. I've reinstalled Arduino and tried 2 different cables and still getting errors about not finding USBtiny device.

Copy of error message:
Arduino: 1.6.12 (Mac OS X), Board: "Arduino Gemma"

Sketch uses 2,108 bytes (39%) of program storage space. Maximum is 5,310 bytes.
Global variables use 39 bytes of dynamic memory.
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x2341/0xc9f)
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x2341/0xc9f)

This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

Are you programming an Arduino Gemma or an Adafruit Gemma? They use two different board files.

No, they go on over and over.

I do not have/own a hub, it is connected directly from the back of the iMac. Same behavior when connected from Apple keyboard usb port (2.0, ?). I can upload successfully to other sbcs (feathers, uno).

the Teal Arduino Gemma. I've tried on my iMac and on a PC laptop and everytime I try uploading I get an error about not being able to find the USBtiny.

Are you pressing the reset button immediately before the upload begins? The red LED should fade in and out while the bootloader is running. The upload has to begin while this is happening.

The green led is on. I push the reset button and the red led blinks several times. I compile the code and hit upload. I'm trying to upload just the blink code to blink the led on the board but no luck. Under Board I have Arduino Gemma selected and Programmer Arduino Gemma. I've run through your Gemma set up page several times.

Red led blinking is not good. It should fade in and out, not blink.
Blinking indicates a problem with the USB connection. Make sure you are not using power-only cables. Try using a USB2.0 hub. Try some different USB ports on your computer.

Not sure what a USB2.0 hub is. Does Adafruit sell them? Can you provide a link?

Use a quality USB cable. Make sure it's not a power-only cable.
