This is with a hub and new cable? Is the red LED still blinking when you press reset? Or does it fade in and out? Are you pressing reset just before the upload begins?

I did not get a hub but got a new cable. The light fades in and out not blinking. I hit the reset button after I verify the code and then wait for the red light to stop pulsing. Then I upload the code and I get the same error. I've tried turning the gemma on and off. Unplugging and replugging it in.

No, don't wait for the light to stop pulsing. That indicates that the bootloader is running. The upload MUST begin while the LED is pulsing.

Also remember that when you press the upload button the compiler compiles before the uploader can start. You want to make sure the light is flashing while the UPLOADER is trying to upload.
