Bleeding new DIYer, need help with adafruit protoshield pack

Post by etomboy »

Hello! Bleeding new user here. (As in, just did "hello world" over pin 13.)

I picked up the Arduino Starter Pack the other day. When I received the protoshield it was not assembled. I'm assuming this is standard operating procedure, but I wasn't able to find any assembly guides on the site. Furthermore, when I started looking over the shield I found these pin headers with short (~2mm) pins - not nearly long enough to connect she shield to the arduino uno! I also have no soldering iron at present, figuring that the kit would come just constructed enough to get through the first few tutorials.

I'm really excited about learning to code and making cool things, but I feel like a total idiot right now. Did I get the wrong shield/pin headers? Is there any way I could get these fancier headers (http://www.adafruit.com/products/85) to make shield construction easier?

Additionally, if this does come with a some-assembly-required protoshield I _highly_ recommend putting up some documentation in the tutorials for this. For folks who haven't picked up a soldering iron in years it's a huge letdown and is killing my momentum to get into this hobby. Just a suggestion for future reference.

Thanks! Looking forward to making cool stuff soon.

Welcome to Adafruit and the forums.

Here is the proto-shield tutorial: http://www.ladyada.net/make/pshield/
For most of our products, you can find a tutorial link on the product description page.

You should have all the parts you need there. Check against the parts list in the tutorial to be sure. If anything is missing, post here and we'll take care of it.

Since you are new to soldering, be sure to have a look at our soldering tutorial too: http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guid ... -soldering
