Prototyping

Post by jockellis »

What is a prototype shield? I'm assuming that its use comes somewhere after the first six lessons. This is the first piece of technology I've been interested in during my 65 years. Outside of cars, that is. But this stuff seems SO interesting.

A proto shield is just a board with general purpose holes and solder pads for prototyping circuits. http://www.adafruit.com/products/51
This tutorial is a good example of its use: http://learn.adafruit.com/arduino-tips- ... arduinoisp

I'm sorry but I'm so green at this I don't understand any of these terms you use. Is there some sort of dictionary for Arduino programming terms? What is prototyping?

Prototyping in this sense means building a circuit without a specialized circuit board. Typically you would start by building the circuit on a breadboard like in the tutorials: http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-ardu ... sing-light

Then to make it more permanent, you would solder the components to something like a proto-shield or one of our perma-proto boards. http://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main_ ... erma-proto

Once you have the prototype working to your satisfaction, you could design a custom circuit board for it: http://www.build-electronic-circuits.com/pcb-design/

Thank you. I understand that term now. But rest assured that there are other terms I'll need clarification to understand. My immediate superior is a very smart Vietnamese who was a math teacher in his country. But here he is back in college working on another math degree. He is having to take English composition and needs me to translate his relatively limited second tongue into something the prof can understand. Translating his version into real English is a bear.

Feel free to ask questions here. There are some pretty smart people that frequent these forums.
