How to connect Protoshield to Arduino?

I just purchased the Arduino Starter Pack (I'm obviously a novice) and I've reached a dead end re the protoshield (Lesson 3). It seems that the protoshield should in some way connect to the Arduino via direct contact but it cannot do so as the surfaces don't align. Am I supposed to use wires?--it doesn't seem so from the photos?
I'd appreciate some help.

You need to solder the headers to the shield. Then it will just plug in.
