RTC DS3231 battery status

by JS123 on Wed Oct 10, 2018 7:50 pm

Hello,

Is there any way I can check the battery status on the DS3231? I would like to know when the battery is getting low or dead so I can display a "Battery needs replacing" message to the user.

I found a post here
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=121599&p=691798&hilit=rtc+battery#p691798
that does show how to apparently read the registers but no confirmation on if that is correct.

If there is any code to
1. Check that battery backup is enabled on the DS3231
2. See what level the battery is at or if it needs to be replaced
that would really help,

Thanks.

There are no signals related to battery health in the status registers of the device (page 14): https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/product-f ... DS3231.pdf
You could monitor the battery voltage directly via an analog pin of your microcontroller.

I couldn't find a direct contact line.
I recently purchased an SD shield, and R3 header kit.
My dyslexia kicked in when soldering the 2x3 connector to the shield... I soldered it to the top side.
Removing it, also destroyed it.
How can I get another one? Apparently it only comes w/the SD shield.

We carry single and double pin breakaway header strips (among others)
You can cut a 3 pin length from a dual-pin strip: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2822

Or you can cut 2 strips of 3 from a standard breakaway header strip and solder them side-by-side: https://www.adafruit.com/product/392

Hi,
2 questions. Is the DS3231 on your board a DS3231SN? The SN works in a wider temperature range and I need it to work below 0C. Also, does your board recharge the on-board CR1220 battery? It is not a rechargeable battery, so that is a potential problem.
Thanks,
mike
