Having Issues with our Adafruit Floras

by gherman2 on Wed Nov 07, 2018 12:25 am

Hello, this is Allyson from the UTEP Costume department.
We recently bought two Floras and a Gemma with the intent of making some of our costumes glow. We ordered it on October 9th and received it on October 18.
On three different computers, Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7, we downloaded the most recent version of the Arduino IDE, downloaded both the proper board information and libraries, and tried both floras on all three. At first, we weren't even getting them to connect, then we replaced the cord, and got them to connect to the computer. Then we tried to run the basic blink code (copied directly from the tutorial) on each of the computers. On all 3 we go the exact same message (this is the code from a later part, but was the exact same message):
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
Arduino: 1.6.9 (Windows 10), Board: "Adafruit Gemma (ATtiny85 @ 8MHz)"

Sketch uses 4,594 bytes (16%) of program storage space. Maximum is 28,672 bytes.
Global variables use 151 bytes of dynamic memory.

Couldn't find a Board on the selected port. Check that you have the correct port selected.  If it is correct, try pressing the board's reset button after initiating the upload.

We checked double checked the ports, disconnected and reconnected the device, tried again and pressed the reset but got the same results.
Then we checked some of the forums that said that we should consider downloading the Arduino IDE 1.6.9, so we put that on the Windows 10, set everything up, downloaded the proper boards and libraries, connected the device, verified the code, everything was fine. Then we tried to upload the code and got the same results.
We had a friend from the lighting department lend us his Mac (I don't know the version but it looked like a MacBook). We set it up according to the tutorial, downloaded the proper boards and libraries, and he got a slightly different result. Rather than saying that his computer couldn't detect the board in the selected port like it was for ours, his would compile and then just get stuck on the upload that wouldn't complete. I don't have a screenshot or code for that, unfortunately.
Also, at random points when we would plug the Flora in, the onboard neopixel would come on as green or blue without any prior code. We would press the reset button and it still wouldn't turn off. It was only plugged into the computer and not a battery pack or anything else as I have read that that happens sometimes when the board is receiving too much power, but it doesn't happen consistently.

I mentioned the Gemma because we were also having some issues with that one, but our main focus at the moment are the Floras. Attached is the screenshot for the error code, and a picture of the flora.
