How much amplification? 3.7W or 20W class D?

How much amplification? 3.7W or 20W class D?

Post by ragemachine »

Hello all,

I am planning a project for a cosplay. I want to use a board, battery source, and a display with GUI to play music/voice files over a hidden speaker. I think I'll need an amp for crowded/noisy environments, but I'm not sure how much amplification I need.

The 20W class D MAX9744 would be more than enough amplification, but I worry about the power draw of the battery pack I'll be carrying. (A max continuous of ~3.5A@12V is a lot - I'd need something like an 80Wh car jump starter battery pack to power this thing for a whole day, and even that has me worried about battery capacity).

As for the 3.7W class D MAX98306, I can't seem to find any videos demonstrating how loud they could drive a speaker (without noticeable distortion).

I'd plan on using some 4", 4-ohm speakers of whatever is the appropriate RMS wattage (20W or ~5W respectively)

Anyone have experience with the MAX98306? Or amplification in general? What is the right size class D amp for my needs?

Any help much appreciated - Thanks
