ds1307 behaving badly age < 6 months

Post by chipmag »

Worked fine at first, but 2 days ago popped up with the wrong time despite a good battery (2.98V). I can partially reset it, but even while still connected by USB, only the first 4 values are correct. I get bizarre results that look like 29 hours, and the math is incorrect as well [ 2019/1/28 (Monday) 29:1:25 + 7d 30s = 2019/2/5 17:31:31 ]. And the output no longer changes. The serial monitor prints exactly the same values for hours, including the seconds since 1970. So I'm pretty sure it's fried.

I'm wondering whether this may have happened because the Itsy Bitsy was also driving your MOSFET running 2 amps to a string of LEDs through pin 9 PWM to the gate. The 12V on the LEDs also goes to the BAT pin. To keep the ds1307 separate it was powered from the other side of the ItsyBitsy. Would a decoupling capacitor protect it better?

And do you have any interest in checking out the carcass?
