CAP1188 Sensor slow to respond

by Jimbee on Tue Aug 20, 2019 11:00 am

Hi,
I have been playing with your cap1188 board and everything is working fine. The one issue I am seeing is when the sensor sits idle (no touches) it seems to be either timing out or going into a sleep/powerdown mode and takes a long time to respond when a touch is attempted. The led flashes every time but no activity via the I2C displaying on the Arduino IDE serial monitor. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Setup:
- Metro M4 using I2C interface to sensor.
- CAP1188 sensor board.
- Using the example code from your library.

How long do you have to wait without touching? How long is the delay in response once you do touch?

Hi Carter,
Thanks for your reply. Testing so far It seems that delays of ~20 - 30 minutes between touches. The touch delay in response is ~10 - 15 seconds to respond and display on the IDE serial monitor. Once it seems to wake up, the touches are back to being very quick to respond.

It sounds like you are just testing this on a breadboard setup? Can you post a photo of your setup in case it might be related to that.

Hi Carter,

Here is a photo of my setup. I am using an old red PCB ground plane as a touch pad.

How is the CAP1188 being powered? I only see GND lines going from the Metro.

[EDIT]
Thought this sounded familiar.

For troubleshooting, please try powering from the Metro using the wiring shown in the guide:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-cap ... out/wiring
and only connect one item at a time. In this case, the CAP1188.

Thanks for your reply. The cap board is being powered by a bench power supply 3.3Vdc. The metro is powered by USB.

I have tried powering the sensor from the metro - no change.
I have tried only one sensor on the I2C bus - no change.

It seems communication with the I2C or the IDE serial monitor goes away. The reason I say this is the cap sensor board LED always flashes with a touch so the sensing input circuit is alive.

OK, good luck. Not sure what was causing the original issue. We couldn't recreate it here.
