VS1053 Headphone/Microphone

by sillySoundQuestions on Sun Apr 04, 2021 4:36 am

I have a question about wiring for the microphone input on the VS1053 Codec + MicroSD Breakout Board.(https://www.adafruit.com/product/1381).

I am trying to create a system where people who have headphones with built in microphones (like the white iphone headphone/mics) can plug into my system and record a message.

I have wired up a 4 contact TRRS Jack and the playback through the headphone portion is working great. But I am unclear on how to connect the microphone portion. For the headphones with microphone that I am using (which are working fine with other devices), this is the pinout:

Tip – Left Output
Ring 1 – Right Output
Ring 2 – Ground
Sleeve – Microphone.

Can I just connect the microphone and ground pins on the audio jack to the Mic + and Mic -? Or do I need to implement a more complex preamplification circuit like the one in the tutorial?

Thank you so much for any help you might be able to provide me with this. I have done a good amount of trial and error and internet searching but what I am doing is not working.

That *should* work. So Ring 2 to Mic - and Sleeve to Mic +. But also, there's no standard pinout for TRRS. Have you been able to verify what you have? Seems like if you have left/right audio working, then you have.

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

I have tested my pinout and it is correct.

My concern is about needing some sort of preampfification/filtering/conditioning before the input because wheat I am getting as recordings is just silence with a little bit of noise. I have tried multiple headphones with microphones and the problem continues. I also know that my headphone/mics are working because I have tested them going into my laptop.

I am so confused. Thank you in advance for any help.

Try using the example circuit shown here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-vs1 ... g-recorder
which is derived from the datasheet:
https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/datasheets/vs1053.pdf
(Fig. 3)
