Adafruit AS7262 Sensor range and color sample size

by dnl87 on Sat Apr 17, 2021 2:40 pm

Hi everyone,
I am trying to build a machine that identifies the color of pearls (approximately 4mm in diameter). The pearls would be placed on a monochrom background. Could the AS7262 sensor successfully detect the color of such a small spot and how far from the pearl should it be placed to do so?
Thanks for your help

To accurately measure the color of a small object like that, you would need to be quite close. And the background would need to be flat black.

Like all planar light sensors, the sensitivity pattern of the AS7262 is Lambertian. That means the sensitivity will be proportional to the cosine of the angle from the central axis of the sensor. In other words: The field of view is nearly 180 degrees, with decreasing sensitivity toward the periphery.

In order to make an accurate color measurement of an object, the only colors within that field of view would need to be coming from that object. Everything else should be flat-black to avoid any influence on the measurement.
