Feather HUZZAH solar power

by ron_g on Thu Dec 03, 2015 12:21 am

I am interested in using this feather and a project where no AC power is available. I'd like it to run out of battery that was being charged from some sort of solar power unit. Do you have anything I could leverage to design such a project?

We have a solar LiPo charger that can power your processor via a boost controller as used in this project:

Thanks, sounds like what I was looking for. I'll check into the details.

Would I need to disable the onboard LiPo charger? I see this comment on the Feather board:
Built in 100mA LiPoly charger with charging status indicator LED, can also cut a trace to disable the charger

The Feather charger is not going to handle a solar power source efficiently, so it is probably best to disable it. The tutorial on the solar charger has a nice design notes section describing the special considerations needed for solar charging.

I'm also interested in making an outdoor IoThing using the Feather, medium solar panel and solar lipoly charger.

Given the behavior of the chargers smart load sharing, do I need to worry about driving a Feather HUZZAH with the 6V coming from the panel?

The chargers tutorial mentions maybe needing an LDO for some MC. Just wondering if I need a LDO in this instance or not or maybe I should use a different MC?

You can connect the battery output of the solar charger to the battery input of the Feather. That will never exceed 4.2v. I'll check to see if it will handle the up to 6v from the load output.

Yes, the SPX3819 regulator should handle a 6v input.

I'm not seeing any specifics for how the Feather charger can be disabled. The guide just says something about cutting a trace. What trace should be cut?

There is a pair of jumper pads near the reset button. Cut the trace between them to disable charging.

That seems obvious to me now. Thanks! This has been working perfectly for me.

Is there an equivalent trace to cut on a Feather M0 Basic to disable charging

There doesn't appear to be an equivalent trace for this in the Eagle schematic. Although, the two boards do seem to have identical charging circuits, otherwise.

If your brave, based on comparing the schematics, you could potentially cut the trace somewhere between pin 3 on the MCP73831/2, and C3.
