High power IR leds - what are you using?

Post by Probedude »

I bought the V1.0 kit a while ago, just sourced the components to build up some more for friends.

About a year ago I was making some IR stuff and was using TSAL6100 LED's due to a particular website saying these were the most powerful (940nm).

Looking at the datasheet the TSAL6100's have a typical 1000mW output at 1.0A vs the 750mW for the IR333-A.

Anyone else have any even more powerful IR led's that you're using?

I tried out my self built TVB-gone using one TSAL6100 LED and one of the IR333C/H0/L10 wide angle LED's. Turned off a neighbor's tv, through their window, from across the street standing on my lawn!

GREAT distance! Now I just need to add some more of these TSAL6100's in an array.

For those of you wanting to make homemade ones, www.vishay.com ships out samples of those LEDs (TSAL6100V), I asked for 15 and had them shipped the same day, no questions asked

Be careful: The TSAL6100 is rated to have 1000mW/Sr, this does not mean it has an output power of 1000mW: mW/Sr means a radiometric power, a power per solid angle. In fact the TSAL6100 has an absolut optical power of 35mW @ 100mA as the TSAL5300, but concentrated to a half angle of 10°. So if you want to turn off TVs at a long distance, take that one, but if you want a wide spread beam, then choose the TSAL5300 with a half angle of 22°.

I don't have the specifications at hand for the IR333-A to compare them.
