Burning the firmware using an arduino

Post by spacedementia87 »

I am trying to complete this project from scratch and I have successfully turned my arduino into an ISP programmer and have confirmed that it is working by uploading the LED blink sketch.

However now I need to upload the TV-B-Gone firmware. However it is a hex file and I cannot see a way of uploading that through the arduino IDE.

So i tried avrdude directly:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/avrdude -c arduino -p attiny85 -P /dev/ttyUSB0
and I get this:

Code: Select all

avrdude: AVR device initialized and ready to accept instructions

Reading | ################################################## | 100% 0.00s

avrdude: Device signature = 0x1e950f (probably m328p)
avrdude: Expected signature for ATtiny85 is 1E 93 0B
Double check chip, or use -F to override this check.

avrdude done. Thank you.
This seems like it is trying to talk to the arduino chip rather than the attiny. How do I fix this?

Also as a side note:
The v1.2 kit can be configured for either N.A. and EU zone which avoids this problem!
How do I configure it to use one or the other?

If you are using the ArduinoISP sketch, you need to specify the serial baud rate to 19200 on the avrdude option, -b 19200. Otherwise it will initiate the Uno bootloader instead.

Sorry to interrupt but I have the same problem I mean what about the other files to upload? Or I just need to install the hex file.

The way I did it was to use the Arduino IDE to upload a LED blink sketch to the ATtiny and made sure verbose was on.

I then looked at the command issued in the consequences window and used that to upload the hex file!

thanks for the question - super newbie here - trying to do the same thing - download hex file without IDE
into BLE 32u4. Can you explain - 'consequences window'. Is this a feature of the IDE? Will I see command line
like instrustions to do the hex load directly via avrdude/usb serial....?
Thanks,
