ESP8266 Huzzah Breakout COM Port greyed out

by adaMike on Fri Jan 12, 2018 2:17 pm

I recently acquired 3 - ESP8266 Huzzah Breakouts and am trying to work through THIS Adafruit tutorial to get going, but I cannot proceed as the COM Port is greyed out in Arduino IDE. My IDE is current and I have been using Arduinos for years and also use the IDE for my 3D printer as well. I've made my own serial cable, but have confirmed 5 volts from my Windows 10 laptop's USB port with a multimeter. When I connect any of the 3 Huzzahs, I don't see any LED flashes, and with each, I get a series of connect/disconnect noises from the PC. Sometimes it stays connected and other times it toggles back and forth between the two noises from the PC.

I installed both the CP210x driver and the PL2303 driver, but nothing is letting me see the available COM ports. FWIW, I've also installed the needed libraries from Github and plugged in the json url in preferences and it seems this is my only holdup. I haven't yet connected anything to any of the I/O, just the Tx, Rx, 5v, and GND have headers soldered on at the moment.

Any suggestions how to proceed?

What are you using to connect to the PC (what chip does it use?)? The HUZZAh does not create the com port your cable does (or should)

Just a USB cable with female Dupont connectors soldered to each lead like the one in this link. https://www.adafruit.com/product/954 Is the Serial Cable anything more than a regular USB cable with female Dupont connectors on the ends? FWIW, if I press one of the tactile switches, the red LED illuminates.

Never mind, I just read in the description inside it has a serial converter chip so I'll order one right away and revisit the topic in a few days if need be. I was just trying to save $10.
