My lab has recently ordered a project to be fabbed/assembled by Circuithub that uses the Adafruit ESP8266 module (product #2491) as a central component of the system. It appears that this module is out of stock at Adafruit and thus not available to us or Circuithub, and the support team says that there is not an ETA for when it will be back in stock. We need to locate a replacement module ASAP, and I'm wondering whether the ESP32 will work.
Do the two modules have compatible footprints?
Are the two modules generally compatible in terms of software/firmware? From what I've gathered from this forum, it sounds like there may be some hiccups in porting code from the ESP8266 to the ESP32, but it can be done. Is that correct?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Compatibility between ESP8266 and ESP32
No, the ESP32 and ESP8266 are completely different devices.
The ESP32 has far more GPIO pins than an ESP8266, and the footprints have nothing in common. I don't think the pads on the two modules are even the same pitch. I don't think there's much carry-over between them when it comes to porting software either.
I checked Digikey and Mouser to see if they had any ESP-12S modules on hand, and they seem to be out as well. Your best bet would probably be to contact Espressif and see if they can suggest any resellers who have stock now.
