Feather M0 Adalogger Unable To Upload Code, Pulsing Red LED

by er99 on Thu Aug 30, 2018 8:26 pm

I recently purchased two Feather M0 Adaloggers and I have not been able to upload code to them from the Arduino IDE. Both correctly register on a port, and I have the board set to "Adafruit Feather M0." My IDE, drivers, and board manager seem to be up to date. Whenever the board is on, the red led constantly pulses as if the board is in bootloader mode. I have made no modifications to the boards.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First, verify your USB cable by using it to connect some other, known-working device to the computer.

There's a plague of charge-only cables out there with USB connectors at both ends but no wires for the data signals. We see people get caught by them every day, and it's become common for people to say they had to try three or four cables before finding one that would support a data connection.

I am using a cable which I can upload to my other boards with, so I am certain that it supports data transfer.

Okay, try powering the Feather from something that isn't a computer or other US host. Does the red LED still pulse under those conditions?

When I power the board from a lipo battery, the LED still pulses.

Does that happen with oth Feathers, or only one?

Both feathers behave the same.

Hmm.. that could be a standard Blink sketch, but let's check some more details.

If you connect one of the Feathers to a computer using a known-good USB cable, does it appear as a Serial Port in the Arduino IDE?

Yes. When I connect the board is registers as a feather M0 in the Arduino IDE.

All right, go into the Arduino IDE's preferences and enable verbose messages during upload, then try to upload a simple sketch like Blink.

If that works, change the delay() time and upload the sketch again. Does the red LED respond to that change?

Nothing will upload, regardless of if the IDE is in verbose mode or not. I have also tried pressing the reset button as the program uploads, which usually fixes these issues, but it still failed. I am using AVR ISP programmer- is that correct?

The programmer setting under the Tools menu is irrelevant unless you're programming a blank chip with a JTAG pod. The board support package contains and specifies the upload utility to use.

Could you post the messages from an upload attempt with verbose messages enabled (between CODE tags please)? That has more diagnostic information than the simple "upload failed."

The previous image is from an upload attempt with verbose was enabled. What specific information/part of the screen, would you like a photo of?

My mistake. I misread the output.

The error above is a problem with the Arduino IDE itself, probably corruption of the files in the board support package. It's easiest to solve that by deleting the whole Arduino15 directory and reinstalling the board support package from scratch.
