Raspberry Pi Zero W

by yingyang on Wed Oct 09, 2019 11:41 am

I can’t seem to get my raspberry pi zero w working. This is my first time using a rpi, so I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong. I have read many troubleshooting articles and none of them have worked. There was one article that had a test that if you plug a micro usb into the USB port on the rpi and plug the other end into a computer, there should be the ding sound of new hardware. I’ve tried that with all of the ports on 3 computers and it hasn’t worked. I also tested each adapter separately and they all work fine. I’ve attached a picture of the connections. I’m using a 5 volt apple charger but I’ve also tried an iPad adapter. There are USB ports on the keyboard so I have my mouse connected from there. Any help would be appreciated.

You don't have a microSD card installed. The Pi needs one there that contains the Linux boot disk (Raspian usually). See https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-raspberry-pi-lesson-1-preparing-and-sd-card-for-your-raspberry-pi for instructions.

Are you sure the USB cable you are using will pass data and is not just a charging cable?

Do you get any flashing on the activity LED?

I am wondering about the power supply. I'm not sure how well one meant to be a charger will work to power a Pi. Also, Pis can be picky about the quality of the USB cables used for power.

There is no light at all. I’ve tried many cables but they all don’t work

OK. With an SD card installed that has the latest version of Raspian on it, connecting power should cause the "ACT" LED to flash as the Pi boots. Please try that again, with nothing else connected and let me know whether you see that.

OK. Email support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread, your original order number, and request a replacement for 1 Raspberry Pi 0W
