Pyportal boot

by TWDM on Thu Jan 23, 2020 11:04 am

Using good cables(3), ie work with Arduino. no amount of double clicking gets the portal recognized as a USB device. Have tried an apple, windows 8 and 10(returns message device no recognized) , two pi's and a lap top running Ubuntu. When plugged in the code runs and returns a message to edit the secrets file. Have read and tried various FAQ's and trouble shooting suggestions, but nothing. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Read through https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pyportal. That will give you what you need to get up and running with your PyPortal. Specifically in response to the message you are seeing: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pyportal/internet-connect.

I am stuck at the first step on six machines the pyportal is not recognized at a USB device. I have no access to PORTALBOOT. Again several computers, multiple cables. The instructions suggest that using a apple computers is the most straight forward, but no luck there either (the apple is not mine and not usually available).

Ah.. so you get the "secrets file" message on the PyPortal display, and not a REPL connection?

If you inspect the USB connector, is there any visible damage? Can you post a clear photo of that area of the board?

Do you still have access to the Ubuntu laptop?

When you double press reset, what does the red LED next to the micro USB connector and the RGB LED next to the reset button do?

OK. Thanks for verifying. That's expected behavior for a USB comm issue. The photos are great. If it's hardware related, it'll most likely be on the pins here:

which can't quite be seen in that photo. If you can post another, that would be great.

And just to be sure - this is a new PyPortal?

Thanks. That photo is excellent. And that connector looks fine. Really weird. Not sure what is going on here. We can try a replacement and see what happens.

Send an email to support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread and your order number and they can send you a replacement PyPortal.

After receiving the replacement I ordered two more. Tested them when I got them. Edited secrets file to get quotes running. Today just went to install the second of the two newer Pyportal 's in a newly printed case. When I went to program I couldn't get it into boot loader mode. Tried several times with three cords, no much and now it doesn't start into the quote program, just red led and neopixel.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

I've found that occasionally it needs to be double-reset while trying to upload. I've also had success with installing CircuitPython, then back to Arduino.
