Pimoroni pHAT Stack for Raspberry Pi as GPIO Extension

by edkloczko on Wed Mar 25, 2020 3:15 pm

Hi,

I understand that this item (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3742) is meant as a way to get multiple HAT's on a Raspberry Pi. I was wondering if it could also function as a way to get additional GPIO ports? I saw the 16 port extension product you have but I need more than 16 additional ports for my project and I was wondering if this would do the trick.

Thank you!

That board is several rows of 2x20 header wired in parallel. It provides a convenient way to mount several Bonnets to a RasPi, but doesn't give you any extra GPIO pins.

You can use MCP23107s though:

https://www.adafruit.com/product/732

The chip has 16 GPIO pins controlled through an I2C interface. You can also modify the I2C address, and have up to eight of them connected to the same I2C bus.

Our GPIO extender uses the MCP23017, with all the connections pre-wired.
