Feather 4.7V 500mAh battery damage

by jklem12 on Sat Jun 27, 2020 9:50 am

I had a simple bluefruit feather setup connected through usb to my PC. I had only run simple blink skethes to test. I bought a 4.7V 500mAh battery as the power management spec recommends. I inserted the battery while USB was connected and immediately saw smoke on the small IC next to the battery.
I think a similar issue occurred here: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=104581

Is this a defective feather or battery?

Your batter is wired in reverse polarity. All the batteries we sell are wired as shown below. We have seen third party batteries wired both ways.

It is simple enough to pop the wires out of the connector and re-insert them with the right polarity. But the charge controller and/or regulator chips on your Feather are likely beyond repair.

Okay thanks. I thought I bought the right one but it was through amazon.
Thanks for the quick response.
