Sound Board 2220 red light will not go off

by turnermw on Mon Aug 14, 2017 10:58 am

When I plug in my Adafruit Audio FX Sound Board - WAV/OGG Trigger with 16MB Flash, Product 2220, the green light goes on and the red light also goes on and stays on. It shows up on my computer as a VS1000B. I am unable to access it as a drive. I had it all hooked up and it was working fine when I first got it. I was able to upload files to it and it was playing those files. Yesterday, I hooked it up to the computer to update more files and that is when the problems began. I have another Adafruit soundboard that is working just fine so I know the cable I am using is working. Is there something I can do to reset the board? I am now not getting any sound from it. Thanks.

Do you have anything else connected to the FX Board's pins?

The only thing connected to the board is the USB cable. Other then that, the board is empty.

Try writing the original OS image back to the Flash chip. They're on the Downloads page of the FX Board tutorial:

That will not work because the computer does not see it as a drive. In order to flash the chip, the computer must see it as a drive.

Sometimes the installers will recognize the VS1000 as a raw device without a filesystem, and it doens't hurt to try.

If that doesn't work, the board probably can't be fixed without a lot of extra equipment. When did you get the FX Board?

I did try. I just tried again this morning. Still will not recognize it. I bought it about 3 weeks ago.

That's within our return/replace period.

Send a note containing a link to this thread and your order number to support@adafruit.com. The folks there will get you a replacement FX Board.

Sorry, I can't figure out how to create a new post ... so I'm replying to this recent post.
I have a similar problem with a new FX soundboard ... green LED on and red LED on, and it doesn't mount.
Specifically, it's the FX soundboard w/2MB 2W (part 2210) ... just purchased October 30, 2018, Invoice 1889851.
It does show up as a device ... VS1000B ... but doesn't mount ... I've tried it on several PCs.
I can't find anywhere in your documentation what the red LED actually means when it's initially cabled ... but various phrases indicate that it's not a good sign.
As others have mentioned, it's impossible to reload the image if it doesn't mount (I did download the 2MB image and win32diskimager-1.0.0).
I'm using USB cables that I use to successfully load many Arduinos.
Please advise.
Thanks

Post a photo showing the component side of the FX Board please. 800x600 images usually work best.

Mike ... here's the component side shot ... if not of sufficient quality, I'll try again.
Thanks

Mike ... I meant to mention ... I put the board under a stereo scope and there are no apparent solder bridges.
The two 14 pin headers look clean and the speaker connectors look clean.
In hindsight, I realize I should have tested the board before soldering on the headers ... but I do a bit of soldering and feel that's not the problem.
Is this a USB issue? I've tried Windows 7, 8, and 10 machines.
If the image onboard is corrupted, is it possible to re-image the board via FTDI or whatever?
John

Your soldering looks excellent, and I don't see anything out of place on the board itself.

What voltages do you see on the trigger pins when the FX Board is powered from a 5V non-USB supply?

By non-USB supply, I assume you mean no USB cable plugged in and 5V applied to Vin(+) and Gnd(-).
I used a battery pack consisting of 3 fresh AA cells ... I realize that should only supply 4.5V.
But using that, each trigger pin (0-10) registered 0.72V ... I assume you were referring to those 11 trigger pins.
Also, and maybe more importantly, only the green LED came on ... however, not nearly as bright as when using the USB cable from the PC.
And it was slightly flickering ... which didn't seem to correspond to the pin voltage measurements.
The red LED was not on.
Also, the battery pack measured 4.75V with no load, and when the board was plugged in, the voltage reading then bounced around from 2.4 to 3.0 volts ... which appeared to match the flicker of the green LED.
Again, at no time did the red LED come on.

Thank you. The trigger pins should sit at 3.3V until they're pulled down by a switch. It sounds like the VS1000's internal voltage regulator has failed.
