avrdude atmega168p support

I bought a barebones AVR kit that came with a 328p and had some good success with it controlling a servo. I wanted to buy some additional micro's but everyone seemed to be out of 328p chips. Being I am just starting out I was not coming anywhere near filling up the flash or EEPROM. Im not sure where Im at with RAM. In any case I figured the 168p which was in stock would be just fine for my experimenting and learning.

My problem is that avrdude does not recognize atmega168p or m168p as a micro controller it supports. It does support the 168 however so I copied the definition for the 168 and changed the id, desc, and signature and appended it to the end of avrdude.conf. I programed the chip and verified it and it appears to have worked but I have not done extensive testing. Is this all I need to do? Are there other changes? Are the chips significantly enough different that this will come back to bite me?

Hi, I'm working with the same ATMEGA168p micro on a Diecimila board.
I used the signature changing fix to be able to upload my code using the arduino IDE and a AVRISPMKII (no bootloader) but it seems is not using the external oscillator. I uploaded a one second delay blinkind led sketch and it takes 16 seconds to blink...

Any ideas? I have been cheking and the pin mapping is the same, so is not a hardware issue, probably the fuses to use the external oscillator are not the same, but I know anything about it.
