Huzzah ESP8266 to Audio FX

by bobhatestowels7 on Wed Feb 27, 2019 2:48 pm

Hi,

I'm attempting to use a Huzzah ESP8266 to control the Audio FX sound board via serial.

I've followed the basic directions from here for Arduino: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-aud ... io-control

I've adjusted the pins in the code to the ones I'm using on the Huzzah. Code compiles fine and loads, however when running I get the error "Not found" when trying to connect to the sound board.

Thanks!

Serial output:

Your connections look like they're correct.

For sanity checks, measure the voltage between the FX Board's Vin and GND pins at the board (the solder joints under the pin header if possible), and try doing a loopback test on the SoftwareSerial connection: connect a jumper between the terminals that plug onto the FX Board's pins, then write a quick sketch that sends data out with ss.write() then checks to see if it comes back on ss.read().

Thanks support_mike,

Voltage is 4.96.

As a sanity check, I disconnected UG from GND, restarted, and was then able to play files using the pin triggers.

I also connected my console cable directly to TX & RX on the Audio FX board, and was then able to communicate directly with the board -- playing files, listing files, etc. So the FX side of things seems to be all good.

The loopback test on SoftwareSerial was not so good, assuming my simple sketch is OK. (Which it may very well not be...)

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
  // softwareserial at 9600 baud
  ss.begin(9600);
  // can also do Serial1.begin(9600)

  ss.write("Test");

  Serial.println(ss.read());

That's returning a value of -1 when run.

I've checked the Arduino libraries, and I do have the ESP version of SoftwareSerial at /ArduinoData/packages/esp8266/hardware/esp8266/2.5.0/libraries/SoftwareSerial.

Try moving the TX and RX signals to pins 2 and 3.

Pins 12-14 are also used for SPI, and may already be allocated by the basic runtime.

No pin 3 on the board. And I had been avoiding 2 as it's used for boot mode and connected to the blue LED.

Right, sorry, I was thinking about the Feather version.

Try moving TX and RX around on the pins that are available, but also try swapping the jumpers you're using. Wire can break inside the insulation, making circuits fail even though they look good.
