Raspberry Pi Zero W - No WIFI

by COLORSH1FT on Fri Jul 19, 2019 9:23 pm

Hey support
I received my Raspi Zero W kit today and tested it out. It booted up no issues, but i could not get it to connect to my wifi. Is there anything i can do to try and fix this? Looking forward to your reply.

Thank you

What version of the OS are you running? If it is not the latest download the latest Raspbian Lite from the Pi foundation site and try that.

Hey franklin97355,

My kit came with an 8GB SD card with the OS preloaded on to it, so that was the first reason I wrote you. I tried what you suggested: using balena etcher; I wrote Raspbian Buster Lite on the card. I booted up in terminal mode; figured out the user and pass, was able to "login". Once logged in, I stayed in the terminal; it never went through desktop set up. I wasn't sure what to do at that point, so for my own experimentation, i reformatted the card and etched the Raspbian Buster Desktop OS on to it. I was able to boot that up fine without a problem; but again it would not connect to my WIFI. My other Raspberry Pi (3 B+) has no issues connecting to this router. Is there anything else I should try?

Thank you for your time

Post the output from `dmesg` between CODE tags please. That will give us more information about the board's hardware recognition process.

Re: Raspberry Pi Zero W - No WIFI

Thank you. That shows the OS recognizing the RasPi Zero-W correctly, and there's some configuration for the Wifi module.

What output do you get from `ifconfig -a`?

Hey @adafruit_support_mike,

That command was not found:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ 'ifconfig -a'
bash: ifconfig -a: command not found
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ 'if config-a'
bash: if config-a: command not found
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ 'ifconfig-a'
bash: ifconfig-a: command not found
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ 'if config -a'
bash: if config -a: command not found
pi@raspberrypi:~ $

Did i do this wrong? Let me know what you think.

Try sudo ifconfig -a and don't use quotes.

Thank you. That means the OS hasn’t configured the Wifi interface, and confirms a hardware problem.

Send a note containing a link to this page and your order number to support@adafruit.com. The folks there will get you a replacement Zero-W.
