SD card mate breakout

by kero905 on Thu Jun 10, 2010 12:03 am

I've been searching for a good SD card breakout board. For some reason sparkfun and others seem to get it wrong, charging $18 for a board that doesn't do level shifting. I like how the waveshield and other ladyada shields handle the buffering but wanted something that wasn't a shield, so I made a board from ladyada's posted layout. I've attached the eagle file.

Features 3.3V and 5V operation, buffered CS/SCK/MOSI/MISO broken out. other pins also broken out separately.
example use:

All or most of the parts are from the wave shield: http://www.ladyada.net/make/waveshield/parts.html
IC1: MCP1700-3302E/TO
IC4: 74AHC125
C1: 100uF / 6V electrolytic
c2 + C3: 0.1uf ceramic
led: normal 3mm led
R10: around 470k
R6: 10K
SD card holder: Tyco 2041021-3

But I think this board takes too much breadboard space, so ill try to improve it later by putting the raw SD card pins on another side. Also note I am a noob and the board might have errors. This file is actually a correction of the PCB I had made, but I have not printed this ver so there might new errors. (I did double check it though)

I have had good luck with these SD/microSD adapters:

http://yhst-27389313707334.stores.yahoo.net/sdcaad.html

http://yhst-27389313707334.stores.yahoo.net/micaad.html

The microSD board is 1.4”x0.8” and the SD is 2.0"X1.3". They have an on-board 3.3V regulator and a 74LCX245 level shifter.

Nice card!

Can it be? Looks like a five pin header from CS to GND could just plug into an arduino. Then you only need a wire to 5V.

CS -> SS -> pin 10
DI -> MOSI -> pin 11
DO -> MISO -> pin12
CLK -> SCK -> pin 13
GND -> Arduino GND pin next to pin 13

Does this work?
With six pins you could have CD.

good eyes :) yes we did that on purpose. unfortunately 5V isnt available on that side, so you have to wire that up
CD would go to pin 9 (its next to CS)

Those are some nice adapters. Wish I known about them before.

Oh.. I just saw your microsd breakout on the Jig how-to. Very nice! Grr wish I knew you were making one, I wouldn't even have bothered clobbering one up.

Thanks.. oh yeah.. I am currently working on a Xbee adapter board specific to the Tweet-a-watt. Basically I hacked up Adafruit Xbee adapter board to get rid of buffer and normal headers and add the voltage dividing resistors. The board is slightly smaller than the normal adapter and I guess it could be helpful if someone had to put together a bunch of Tweet-a-watts.

Fix is simple, dont buy counterfeit cards that lie about their capacity.

That is what the fake cards do, the controller thinks it has a gig of flash connected, it really only has a lot less so that it will format and show capacity and then lose anything written to the portion beyond its capacity.

http://fightflashfraud.wordpress.com/ says it all

If you cant run h2test over the whole card then it is a fake. Most of the cheap ones sold on ebay are fake, they rely on people not finding out till after the limit to dispute with paypal is up so you cant do anthing about it.

You have a 128meg card faked to look like a 1 gig card.

If you got it recently then you may be able to file a paypal dispute, but most sellers load the postage which you normally dont get refunded, so even if you do return the card to them they have made money on the whole deal.
