Wearable microphone, amp and speaker

by PsychDoc on Tue Aug 11, 2020 3:10 pm

I teach and now that I am wearing a mask, I have to speak loudly. I find it nearly impossible to speak and be heard. Can anyone tell me how to make a wearable microphone small enough to fit in my mask with Bluetooth to/ or wired into a tiny amp and speaker? I'm going to build this so I don't have to yell all day long?

Any help is appreciated

As a practical matter, it won't matter whether the microphone is inside the mask or outside it. The mask might cause some attenuation, but not enough to cause problems for a mic a couple of inches from your mouth.

The MAX4466 is a good, simple electret preamp, and can feed signal to a MAX9744 20W power amp:

Unfortunately, Bluetooth audio isn't a DIY option. Only the protocol now known as Bluetooth Classic can transmit data fast enough, and it's not hacker-friendly. Among other things, all BT-C devices have to transmit a vendor ID that you can only get by paying the Bluetooth Working Group a license fee (around $5k IIRC).

Wifi would be fast enough, and we have several microcontrollers with Wifi support (plus our AirLift Wifi coprocessors):

We don't have any existing code for streaming audio over Wifi though.
