Li-Po Battery not powering Adafruit Huzzah32

Post by clembeschu »

Hi,
I have been working with a Adafruit HUZZAH32 Feather (with the JST connector built-in) for a few months.
It is working really well but it can't be powered by a Li-Po battery i bought.
Here is the battery i chose.
https://www.amazon.fr/MakerStack-Batter ... 79&sr=8-42
According to the datasheet of the HUZZAH32 it should work fine but when i tried to plug it for the first time, it got hot (so i unplugged it right away).
I tried on two HUZZAH and got the same thing. Since that the CHARGE LED is not working anymore. My HUZZAH is not dead since my code still works when powered via Micro-USB.
It seems my JST connector is dead though. Is there something I missed ?

If you need any information, don't hesitate to tell me.
Thanks for reading

When I read this line in the datasheet, it got me confused "The JST connector polarity is matched to Adafruit LiPoly batteries. Using wrong polarity batteries
can destroy your Feather". Does it mean I can't use a non-Adafruit battery ? I bought a Li-Po Battery with a JST connection cable (which fits in the JST connector of the HUZZAH)

Here is the link of the datasheet if you want to verify.

Thanks

Not all batteries are wired with the same polarity, so some 3rd party batteries may have the wrong polarity for the Feather. From the Amazon photo, it looks like yours are wired in reverse.

It is not difficult to fix. Using a toothpick or similar sharp object, you can press on the metal locking tabs on the side of the connector and remove the wires from the shell. Then you can re-insert them in the correct orientation.

When the battery is plugged in, the black and red wires should be oriented as shown in the photo in the guide:

If you have already plugged in a battery with reverse polarity, the charge controller on the board is most likely already permanently damaged.

Thanks a lot for your answer, that's the kind of answer I was looking for.
I verified and it looks like it was plugged wrongly.
I'll need to buy another board. Thanks for answering quickly.
I wish you a pleasant day.

You don't need to buy another board, just the charger controller IC and replace it. Let us know if that fixes it
