Checking, I see the serial cable's pin7 takes the AVR's pin 1 (^reset) low...

BTW: Is there a way to enable the circuit AND having it connected to the serial?


get your computer to bring pin7 high? you'd have to bring it low again to enable programming.[/quote]

But then the circuit would be dependent on the software that would do this. I was thinking on altering avrdude or adding some electronics to handle this pin's run/burn modes - are my ideas applicable?

keep in mind that three pins of portB are also connected to the serial cable. i think you're asking for a world of trouble.

not on an attiny2313. not supported. only 2k of program space.

Software driven serial I/O (bit banged) could be used on the SPI or any other general purpose I/O pins.

The 2313 can write to it's program memory, so a bootloader is possible.

Here is an example of software serial and writing to program memory using the 2313 based MiniPOV3. It's not a bootloader, but could easily be modified to be one.
