Unable to upload to Feather Bluefruit LE

by jasper421 on Sun May 08, 2016 3:06 pm

I recently purchased a Feather BLE intended for use in a quadcopter, due to its small size and many features.

Upon connecting it to my laptop (MacBook Pro 13 inch, mid 2012, El Capitan) the red LED (#13) pulses continuously. It shows up in the IDE as /dev/cu.usbmodem1411 but I am unable to upload any code to it. According to the product description, it should enumerate as "Adafruit Feather 32u4".
I have "Adafruit Feather 32u4" selected in the boards menu, on the Arduino IDE 1.6.8. When the reset button on the board is depressed, the the LED stops pulsing, however as soon as the button is released, it continues pulsing. It does not matter if the button is pressed once or twice (to enter bootloader), it only pulses. Even if the board is connected to a battery (no USB connection), I get the same results.

The basic "blink" sketch compiles fine, however it fails to finish uploading. The verbose output reads as follows:

Problem uploading to board.  See http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload for suggestions.

I have been unable to upload any sketches to the board, however I can connect to the nRF51822 with the Flora BLE app. Additionally, I have tried to upload on another mac and with another USB cable and had the same results. I have also tried this fix, to no avail: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-feather-32u4-adalogger/faq

Any ideas as to what the issue is? Hardware? Is the board fried?

Thank you in advance!

The red LED should pulse for about 10 seconds after you release the reset button. Does it keep pulsing longer than that?

The LED pulses forever, without stopping. I've tried leaving for more than a half an hour and it continues to pulse.

Hmm.. do you have anything connected to it besides the USB cable?

Nothing at all, the board is brand new and has not been used with anything else except the battery, which yields the same results.

That's wierd, but let's see if anything is obviously amiss with the hardware.

Post a photo showing the component side of the Feather please, well enough lit and focused that we can see all the parts. 800x600 images usually work best.

All components appear to look fine, no cold joints or visible parts missing as far as I can tell.

Aha! You don't have a 32u4.. you have an M0.

Try selecting "Adafruit Feather M0" in the Tools->Board menu and see if that makes it behave.

Hey,
I am facing the similar issue with my Feather Adalogger M0 board, and all the new boards also goes into the same mode where it shows 'programer not responding'. Can you please advise how did you fix it?

Thanks
Sohail

First, verify your USB cable by using it to connect some other, known-working device to the computer.

There's a plague of charge-only cables out there with USB connectors at both ends, but no wires for the data signals. We see people get caught by them every day, and it's become normal for people to say they had to try three or four cables before finding one that worked.

Yes, I did change three different cables. I am using the cables that come with other development kit for prgramming. It doesn't work for any of the cables now.

Sorry, I need a specific set of words: does any cable you tried sucessfully connect another, known-working device to the computer? I need a positive test before I can rule out a false negative.

I started with one device and a specific cable. It worked absolutely fine for about 10-15 different programs and I tried multiple codes on the same device using same cable.
Then I tried to use a delay mode for checking power savings and then kt started not responding.
I switched to new device and it didn't work for simple blink LED example as well.
Then I ran through the steps provided, changed cable, opened verbose and pressing the reset twice during upload. However, it worked for only one device and not for the 3 new devices.

Now all the devices show programmer not responding regardless of which PC I use, which cable I use and even if I start fresh with a new board.

I hope this is enough details that was needed.

Thanks
