Need Advice: Addressable LEDs/SMDs

by Jeff1701 on Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:26 am

A future prop project calls for me to use addressable LEDs/SMDs. They will be arranged in a grid pattern and used to back light transparencies. The LEDs will be turned on/off by a random algorithm. So this second I might turn on LEDs numbered 0 and 3, and the next second turn those off and turn on LEDs 5 and 7.

I've been doing some research on addressable LEDs and I'm slightly confused by the offerings. So I thought I would ask the Adafruit community for some advice. Here are the parameters of what I'm looking for:

Daisy chained with 3 wires: power, ground, and data.
No need for RGB. All of the LEDs need to be warm white.
LEDs/SMDs need to be about the size of those you typically see on LED strips
Operates on 9 volts
Easily used with an existing Arduino code library.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks...Jeff

That would be Neopixels (WS2812). There are also Dotstars, LPD8806 and other types that use 4 wires.
No need for RGB. All of the LEDs need to be warm white.

We do have warm-white only strips for DotStars. Neopixels are available in RGB and RGBW.
LEDs/SMDs need to be about the size of those you typically see on LED strips

We sell Neopixels and DotStars in various forms - including bare SMD chips. If you are planning to fabricate your own SMD boards, LEDs do require special handling. It may be simpler to fabricate your matrix from high density strips, or just use one of the Neopixel matrix boards.
Operates on 9 volts

Almost all of these are designed for 5v operation. A few will run on 12v.
Easily used with an existing Arduino code library.

We provide libraries for all the pixel types we sell.

Thanks. I think warm white Dotstars will do what I need. I'll do some research into that and possibly have some follow up questions.
