Arduino or Similar Project - Newby

by muttleytm on Sat Nov 02, 2019 12:02 pm

HI,

I'd like to build what I imagine is a pretty simple project, but, I've never worked with Arduinos or similar things before. I'm looking for a little advice on the best type to use, maybe find some existing code I can adapt, etc.

The controller will:

Turn on a heater element and display the temperature and allow the the desired temperature to be adjusted (buth there will be a default value), and maybe blink or beep when the set point is reached.

The device is basically a press and when the press is first engaged (manually or possibly with a pneumatic cylinder, also controlled by the controller) it will start a timer. The timer will have a default value, but, it too, should allow the set point to be altered through an interface of some sort, rather than altering the code. When the time value is reached it will signal this. If a pneumatic cylinder is used, it will open a solenoid valve to engage the press and close it to disengage the press. Maybe it will need to open one and close another, but, I think some cylinders have springs that will bring them back to the starting position.

That's about it for the controller. There is a mechanical side to it, but, I think that will be pretty simple. I know of Arduinos and similar devices but have never used them before or know the programming languages used etc. I have done some programming over the years, but, I'm sure never the languages that Arduinos would use (not that I remember much anymore anyway). There's also the terminology of Arduinos. I don't get some of it - "shields"?

Anyone with any specific suggestions, examples, recommendations on where to find a good tutorial, etc. please respond. Thanks.

These things look very useful and this seems like it would be a nice simple project for me to get my feet wet.

TIA

Sounds like a good project for an Arduino.

This tutorial shows how to use an Arduino for temperature control. It is for cooking, but the same general principles apply to temperature controls in general. The guide also goes into detail about implementing a user interface for the controller.

Hi and welcome.
You wrote...

Yes Arduino boards are useful and can do what you are asking, but... the project you describe is not a "dip your toe in" endeavor but it is not a double somersault off the 10 meter platform kind of project either. More like a cannon ball into the deep end. You will get all wet learning the basics and about how all the many parts of your project work and fit together. It will take some time to figure it out but will be fun.

The best place to start is with an Experimenter Kit like this one from Adafruit http://www.adafruit.com/product/3588 The kit and guide will teach you the basics and how most of the parts you will need for your project work.

From your description your project will need relays, temperature sensors, display, input device, buzzer sound, LED lights, and possibly solenoid valves.

You will find lots of helpful people on this forum if you get stuck.

Good luck and let the immersion begin.
